FAMILIES UNITE TO MAKE A STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY
Following the tragic killing of yet another promising young man, Steven Grisales followed swiftly by a stabbing on the same road in less than a week in Edmonton London.
Hazel mother of five sons living in Enfield & director of Nelson Williams Foundation supported the residents of the enclave on College close & College Gdns by organising a Peace Vigil.
Hazel says I dont know what the answer is to this sickness devouring our communities, but I know if it was an infectious disease something would have been done about it already! We know it is time for all families to stand together, shoulder to shoulder & say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
The event brought solidarity to the community and one voice against knife crime, but more importantly a sense of PEACE & SUPPORT to the residents on the College close estate. It was well attended by residents, well wishers, inter faith leaders, councillors..
Hazel says for two days following Stevens killing & the stabbing of another boy Andre, our volunteers had been out on the estate speaking with residents & what is clear is that they are worried, scared & feel unsupported. One resident told us they have been requesting of Enfield Council that adequate lighting & CCTV, be installed at the bottom end of the street in the play area. Where consistently youth gather in the evenings, creating intimidation & havoc! Furthermore she says Most parents round here are not clear on what is available for young people to do in the evenings. The youth appear disenfranchised from the community.
As an organisation we strongly believe in the old adage the devil makes work of idle hands! It is to that end we are seeking to give youth the right tools through training, workshops, enterprise programmes, to encourage youth in more worthwhile life enriching activities.
The 15yr old convicted killer of Steven was sentenced to life in prison in June 2012 to serve a minimum of 10 and half yrs.
Media reports say he showed no remorse, he had been on a TAG order at the time of Stevens killing, but had broken off the TAG!
Stevens parents are campaigning for a review of the circumstances as to why their sons killer had not been incarsarated for breaking the order just 6 days before killing Steven!
